We’re Expanding! - A note from our Board President

I’m so excited to share that Sacred Heart Community Service is expanding into a second location at 550 South 1st Street!

The new building, located in downtown San Jose provides much-needed space in the same community Sacred Heart has served for decades. In 1998 we built our current community center at 1381 S. First Street to serve 10,000 people with a total of 15 staff. Today we work with 50,000 people annually with 100 staff and thousands of volunteers. The new building will give us the space we need to keep supporting the community.

Recently, my 10-year-old daughter and I volunteered to help pack food boxes for Sacred Heart’s holiday program. After more than a year of feeling disconnected by the pandemic, it was truly wonderful to be together in real life with other volunteers and with staff, bagging sweet potatoes and working toward the common goal of supporting families in our larger community during the holidays.

SHCS is a place where we show up for each other. Whether it’s showing up to ask for help when your family needs it, showing up to sling sweet potatoes in the parking lot, or showing up at the Board of Supervisors to advocate for equitable distribution of COVID relief funds - we are working toward a community free from poverty.

While SHCS is so much more than a building, physical space is important. So far we have raised over $5 million and we are very grateful to the donors who contributed. As one of those donors, I am hoping you will join with me to support this critical fundraising campaign. Together we are showing up for Sacred Heart in a big way.

With your support, we can continue to show up for each other, again and again, to collectively build a community free from poverty.

With much gratitude,

Melissa Morris
