Sacred Heart Reads: Women’s history for the whole family

Annalena displaying books series Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls

"My name is Annalena.  I read Dr. Wangari Maathai.  This book is about Dr. Wangari Maathai who plants a forest in Kenya and she encountered going to gail many times and helped make a park in Kenya stay there.  I recommend these books because they are about very helpful women hoo changed the world."

From Mom:

This December my seven year old received Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls as a gift.  Little did I know it would be a gift for everyone in our family.

These are beautifully bound, short chapter books about a diverse slate of women during different periods in history.

  • Alicia Alonso (1920-2019) - a ballerina from Cuba who immigrates to the US and loses her sight

  • Ada Lovelace (1815-1852) - a British aristocrat and mathematician in the early 1800s who helped birth computer science

  • Dr. Wangari Maathai (1940-2011) - an environmentalist and Nobel Peace Prize winner from Kenya

  • Junko Tabei (1939-2016) - from Japan, the first woman to summit Mt. Everest

  • Madam CJ Walker (1867-1919) - African American inventor, entrepreneur, and community leader

The books follow these women through their personal and political challenges and achievements.  They teach us to never give up and to never be defined by the conventional ideas or practices that surround us.  I feel very grateful for the artists, authors, and activists that are bringing these stories - so often erased  to light.  This is a wonderful series to snuggle up with your kids and learn together about the contributions of women to society as well as our enduring strength and resilience.
