Sacred Heart Community Service Code of Conduct & Volunteer Guidelines

Our commitment is to treat every volunteer, employee, and customer with dignity, compassion, and respect. Therefore, it is important that every volunteer be aware of and carries out the responsibilities set forth below:

Code of Conduct

Volunteers will treat customers, volunteers, donors, and staff with dignity, compassion, and respect. Volunteers will maintain a positive attitude and keep in mind Sacred Heart’s vision, recognizing we are here to serve those who come for services. Volunteers will be expected to conduct themselves appropriately, refraining from running the premises, throwing objects or engaging in horseplay. Volunteers will maintain a flexible attitude in understanding that you may be reassigned to a different task if volunteer needs change. Volunteers will bring concerns regarding customers or other volunteers to a staff coordinator and not personally confront or challenge customers or other volunteers. Here at SHCS, we firmly believe that everyone should be treated equally and that all of our customers should have the same access to services. Please be sure to follow our guidelines, policies and other directions that you will receive from your program coordinator. If you have questions about any of our guidelines or policies, please do not hesitate to ask your program coordinator. They we be able to explain why these are important to maintaining a safe and welcoming environment for everyone who comes through our doors. Failure to follow guidelines or policies may result in permanent dismissal at our discretion.

Photography of our members and volunteers is not permitted. We respect confidentiality.

Attendance and Breaks

We ask that volunteers register ahead of time, show up at their scheduled shift time, sign in to confirm their attendance and complete their shift. If they are not able to attend their scheduled shift we ask that volunteers cancel their shift by cancelling online through your online portal or contacting the Volunteer Office (408) 278-2171/volunteers@sacredheartcs.org. We ask that you notify staff when you’d like to take a break and eat/drink in our courtyard. If you need to leave early, please contact the Volunteer Office so that we can update your account.

Service Hours

Volunteers are responsible for logging in on arrival and keeping track of their hours, if needed. Area Coordinators will sign the hours off after each shift if the volunteer requires a signature.

Parking

We ask volunteers to park in the surrounding neighborhood. We reserve our parking lot for members receiving services. Please do not park at Wendy’s or Denny’s.

Dress Code

Closed-toed shoes are required for safety while volunteering in our Warehouse. Masks are optional. Please dress in layers as you may be working outside. Volunteers are asked to refrain from wearing headphones and using cell phones while volunteering. Members, volunteers and staff need to be able to communicate.

No Smoking Policy

Smoking is not permitted on Sacred Heart property. We ask that you leave the parking lot to smoke.

Harassment

Sacred Heart is committed to providing a work environment free of harassment. Sacred Heart will not tolerate harassment of Volunteers by managers, coordinators, or co-workers. Similarly, Sacred Heart will not tolerate harassment by its volunteers. Harassment includes verbal, physical, and visual conduct that creates an intimidating, offensive, or hostile working environment or that interferes with work performance. Harassment can take many forms and includes, but is not limited to: slurs, jokes, statements, gestures, pictures, or cartoons regarding a volunteer’s race, religion creed, color, national origin, ancestry, medical condition, physical or mental disabilities, sex, age, marital status, military or veteran’s status, sexual orientation, or family care leave status. Any incident of harassment, including work-related harassment by any Sacred Heart volunteer or any other person, should be reported immediately to the Area Coordinator, Volunteer Coordinator or to the Executive Director, who is responsible for investigating the matter. Sacred Heart will investigate all complaints in a manner we deem appropriate.
